The Important Timeline for Pet Vaccinations

Pet vaccinations are crucial in helping to keep your pet happy and healthy, providing them with the ability to live a long life and protection from a variety of diseases and illnesses. There are multiple types of vaccines that different pets need throughout their life. The majority of the vaccines your pet will receive will be at the beginning of their life when they are the most susceptible.

There are two categories of vaccines which are referred to as core vaccines and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines include vaccines that are recommended for all pets, regardless of your pet's lifestyle. Non-core vaccines may be recommended for your pet based on a variety of factors, including their lifestyle and whether or not they are an outdoor pet.

Core vaccines include:

  • Distemper
  • Parvovirus
  • Hepatitis
  • Rabies

Non-core vaccines include:

  • Immunodeficiencies
  • Bacterial and viral infections, and more

Most core vaccines are administered to cats and dogs around the age of six weeks and be given over several weeks to avoid overloading your pet's immune system. As they age and become adults, boosters are recommended on a yearly or three-year basis, depending on your pet, their age, and their lifestyle. It's also important to monitor your pet's health after they've received their vaccinations to ensure that their immune systems are properly responding to the vaccines.
