WE LIVE IN EARTHQUAKE COUNTRY, but storms can also render us without power, water, or groceries for a few days a year. We know it is important to think about disaster preparedness for your family, but what about your pets? Check out our Disaster Prep for Pets Checklist below, and incorporate it into your safety plans.
Be Prepared. It seems silly to have the fist item on the list say "Be Prepared", but doing things in advance is crucial to a successful plan and saves lives. Get to know your neighbors so they can help your pets if you are not home, and vice versa. Be willing and able to help others. Meet your local veterinarians and learn about animal-related resources in your community, such as vets or shelters that can help in an emergency.
Food and Water and litter. Be sure you have pet food and water in your kit designated for your pets. Pack a bag of food and a few gallons of water for each pet. Remember bowls for food and water, along with a spoon and can opener if needed. And don't forget litter and a box for kitties. Disposable litter boxes are available and are great for this situation.
Medical Records. Get copies of your pets vaccine history, rabies certificate, and if your pets have chronic problems, their medical records and a list of medications. Keep them in a folder in your kit for easy access if needed. Also have phone numbers for your local vet hospital and a local pet emergency hospital.
Pet ID. Be sure your pets have collars and tags, along with a microchip, that identifies them and you as their owner. In the event they are separated or lost, you can be easily identified. Check your pets microchip registration and be sure your information is up to date with a cell phone, and any pertinent info about your pet. You can include vital information if your pet needs medication or has a food allergy. A shelter can see this information and treat your pet accordingly.
Crates and Carriers, Collars and Leads. Have a crate or carrier ready in the event you need one for your pets. Keeping one in the car is ideal, along with others (as needed) near your Disaster Kit. Include collars and leashes or harnesses for each pet, even cats!, in case it is necessary for securing your pets in an emergent scenario.
Pet First Aide Kit. Have a first aid kit designated for pets in your Disaster kit. You can purchase kits made for pets from places like Chewy and PetSmart online. You can also make your own using guidelines found on the Seattle Humane website.
Be Prepared. We are ending with this one as well, since it truly is the most important thing on the list. Being ready in an emergency can save lives, your pets included. No one wants to be caught off guard and feel like they must leave their pets behind. Have a family or neighborhood meeting, create a Disaster Kit, and be prepared "just in case". It is the best thing you can do to ensure the safety of everyone in your household.
